What is car insurance?

Probably the most common type of insurance out there, and certainly the most well-known, car insurance provides you with cover if you are involved in a road accident and your vehicle becomes damaged. Unlike certain other types of insurance, car insurance is a legal requirement if you drive a vehicle unless it is declared as off-road using a SORN.

Being caught without valid car insurance could result in six penalty points on your driving license and a £300 fine.

What is covered by car insurance?

If you and your car are involved in an accident, regardless of who is at fault, your car insurance can provide cover for injuries to either yourself or others involved, damage to properties, and damage to another person’s vehicle.

Not all policies are the same, as some can also provide cover if your car is stolen, if someone attempts to break inside or if it is damaged by fire.

It is important to remember that your car insurance policy will last for 12 months. Many providers will automatically renew your policy for another year unless you cancel and obtain coverage elsewhere.

What kinds of car insurance are there?

There are three main kinds of car insurance available. These are:

Third party only - In order to drive on UK roads, this is the minimum level of cover that you are allowed to have. It only provides cover for injuries or damage done to others, their vehicle and property in an accident. It won’t provide any financial help for repairing your damaged vehicle or helping with your own injuries

Third party, fire and theft - Along with providing the level of cover stated above, this kind of policy will also pay out compensation if your car is stolen or damaged due to theft or fire

Comprehensive - Not only does this policy include cover for everything stated above, but it also protects you, the driver, and can cover any costs of repairing damage to your car. Some comprehensive policies can also include compensation for legal expenses, medical treatment and damage done accidentally
