How does No Medical Life Insurance Work?

No medical life insurance does exactly what it says on the tin. It’s a kind of insurance policy that requires no medical examinations to be completed before cover can be granted.

When you usually apply for any typical life insurance policy, you will be asked a number of questions about your health, lifestyle - such as whether you smoke and how much you drink - and family medical history. The answers you give will not only determine whether or not you need a medical examination, but can also influence the level of cover you receive and how much your monthly premiums will be.

Can I get NO Medical Life Insurance without a Medical Check?

The short answer is yes; although this will depend entirely on your individual circumstances.

If the answers you provide in your initial questionnaire suggest that you are young and healthy i.e. a non-smoker, occasional drinker with a healthy weight, then it is unlikely that you will need to be sent for a medical examination and a doctor’s report. No medical life insurance will then apply to you. However, if you are older or have been a heavy smoker for most of your life, then you are more likely to be asked to go for medical checks.

Although you may not want to undergo a medical examination, it is important that you are as honest as you can be when answering the questions. Not being honest can have an impact on your policy in the future. For example, if you say that you don’t smoke, and it comes to light later down the line that you have been a heavy smoker for some time, then your policy could be invalidated.

Why is a medical sometimes necessary?

As life insurance is a policy that pays out if you were to pass away, insurance companies need to determine how much of a “risk” you are to them. So your monthly premiums will depend on a number of different factors including your health and family history.

Having a medical or getting a doctor’s report produced allows insurance providers to consider your application more carefully and with more details to hand, that way they will be able to give you a more accurate monthly price with the right type of cover.

If you are required to go for a medical, try not to worry about it too much. The insurance provider will cover the cost, and it can be arranged at a time and place that is suitable for you. What will typically happen is a doctor or nurse will check your height and weight to calculate your BMI and check your blood pressure. Depending on the provider and type of policy, you may be asked to undergo further tests.
